Local Gov’t Ministry mourns passing of Dagbon Overlord Ya-Na Abukari II

Accra, July 14, GNA – The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ya-Na Abukari II. 

In a statement signed by Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, the Sector Minister, the Ministry extended its condolences to the Regent, Chiefs and elders of the Dagbon Traditional Area, the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, the Regional House of Chiefs and all Ghanaians affected by the loss. 

The Ministry said the late Ya-Na Abukari II made significant contributions to peacebuilding, national unity, cultural preservation and development within the Dagbon Kingdom and Ghana as a whole. 

The statement said the late Overlord would be remembered for his role in bringing an end to the Dagbon conflict and for ascending the throne as a symbol of peace, wisdom and reconciliation. 

It described his reign as one that reflected the values of dignity, selfless service and commitment to the welfare of his people, which were central to Ghana’s traditional leadership institution. 

The statement said the passing of the revered traditional ruler was not only a loss to Dagbon but also to the entire nation, adding that his legacy of leadership and efforts towards reconciliation would continue to inspire future generations. 

The Ministry assured the bereaved family and the people of Dagbon of its solidarity during the mourning period and prayed for strength and comfort as preparations were made to give the late Overlord a befitting farewell. 

“May the soul of the late Overlord rest in perfect peace,” the statement added.
