Assin Manso (C/R), July 14, GNA- Emancipation Day celebration has been launched at Assin Manso in the Assin South District of the Central Region with series of activities lined up to take participants through the atrocities of the transatlantic trade against humanity.
The week-long celebration will commence on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, with a youth display and film show and would climax on Saturday, August 01, with a durbar and an artiste’s night at Assin Manso.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Charles Kwakye Buabeng, Central Regional Director of Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) said Ghana was spearheading an international campaign on reparations. with the United Nations which had already gained the support of several countries.
He stated that the growing international backing was expected to position Ghana as a preferred destination for people of African descent seeking to reconnect with their roots and visit sites linked to the transatlantic slave trade.


In addition, he noted that Ghana’s growing international profile through Emancipation and Pan- African-Historical-Theatre- Festival (PANAFEST), placed the country at the forefront of heritage tourism, making adequate preparation by communities essentially, to maximise the economic and cultural benefits.
He therefore urged Ghanaians to welcome visitors with confidence and pride, stressing that stronger engagements between local communities and the diaspora could unlock investment opportunities and foster long-term partnerships.
Meanwhile, Barima Kwame Nkyi XIII, Paramount Chief of Assin Apimanim Traditional Area said Emancipation Day had become an annual event to commemorate the resistance and liberation of African people in the Diaspora against enslavement and violation of their human rights.
He called on residents to support the programme to ensure the area benefitted from the opportunities associated with Emancipation and PANAFEST celebrations.
