Adidome (V/R), May 15, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region has commemorated this year’s Constitution Week with an outreach program for the “Okada” Riders’ Association, held at the Adidome Lorry Park.
The engagement, themed: “Ghana’s Future: Our Collective Responsibility,” aimed to foster civic awareness and promote responsible citizenship among commercial motorcycle operators.
Mr. George Amey, the District Director of the NCCE, underscored the vital role of Okada riders in shaping the nation’s future.
He urged them to take active interest in national discourse and uphold the values of patriotism, discipline, and integrity.
“You are not just transport providers; you are citizens with the power to influence Ghana’s direction. Upholding our shared values is key to securing a better future for all,” Mr. Amey stated.
He also cautioned against the rising abuse of opioids and other harmful substances, particularly among the youth in the district.
He warned that such practices not only endanger individual lives but also undermine national development.
Mr. Frank Eli Azumah, the NCCE’s District Program Officer, emphasized the importance of road safety, drawing attention to Article 41(d) of the 1992 Constitution, which indicates “the duties of a citizen: to respect the rights, freedom and legitimate interests of others, and generally refrain from doing acts detrimental to the welfare of other persons” therefore mandating citizens to respect the rights and welfare of others.
He called on riders to exercise greater care on the roads and be mindful of other users to curb the increasing incidents of traffic accidents in the area.
“The Constitution is not just about rights; it also outlines our duties. Respect for others on the road is part of your civic responsibility,” Mr. Azumah noted.
Mr. Ben Nudzie, the Chairman of the Central Tongu Okada Riders, expressed gratitude to the NCCE for the educational engagement. He pledged the association’s commitment to promoting lawful conduct and contributing positively to the community.
The engagement forms part of NCCE’s broader efforts to deepen civic consciousness and empower citizens at all levels to play active roles in Ghana’s democratic journey.
