Sunyani, (Bono), May 7, GNA – Mr Yaw George Ankamah, the Bono Regional Director of the Department of Children has urged the media to put a spotlight on issues inimical to the growth and development of children.

He said the role of the media in helping to identify and tackle the challenges affecting the welfare of children, especially those in deprived communities, could not be underestimated, and urged media practitioners to do more to help alleviate the vulnerabilities of children.

Mr Ankamah gave the advice when speaking at a forum in Sunyani organised by the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to mark the 2025 celebration of the World Press Freedom Day on the theme “overcoming barriers to accessing Information in the age of Artificial Intelligence”.

He indicated that “there are numerous issues affecting children’s welfare that have been overlooked for far too long,” saying “those issues if properly told, could stimulate action and support for the young ones”.

Mr Ankamah said the future of the “suffering children” hinged on the “narratives that are crafted about them today and is through responsible and impactful journalism that their stories can be well told with the required urgency and empathy”.

Dr Leonard Amengo, a renowned journalist who presided urged the media to endeavour to upgrade themselves to meet the contemporary demands of journalism, saying the media landscape was rapidly evolving and required excellence and innovation in telling impactful stories.

He said the ability to produce compelling stories rewired capacity building to adapt and apply new technologies.
