Salakope (VR), May 21, GNA – Tidal waves victims at Salakope, Amutsinu and Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, has received support from Mr. Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah Atokple, the Volta Regional Council of State Member to mitigate their plight.
The support, worth thousands of Ghana Cedis, include relief items which include as bags of rice, sugar, boxes of spaghetti, boxes of cooking oil among others.
Mr Tanko handed over the items to the Regional National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials and the Assembly Members of the affected areas, at his residence at Weta in the Ketu North.
Mr Tanko stated that the donation was to show solidarity with the victims who have lost their homes, belongings, and daily comforts due to the destruction caused by the tidal waves.
“I must commend NADMO and the Assembly Members of the affected areas for their commitment to ensuring that relief items reach those who are the most affected, and share it equally to benefit all,” he said.
He emphasised that community compassion were the greatest strengths in time of crises and difficulties and pledged to the victims for constant support until permanent solution is provided to solve the tidal wave challenges.
He said the recent impacts of the tidal waves destruction that hit the victims at Agavedzi, Amutinu, and Salakope was significant which left many residents homeless and demanded greater intervention to provide physical, psychological, spiritual and emotional support to the victims to restart new life.
“The donation is part of the ongoing efforts to support the victims of the tidal waves. It is hoped that more support will be forthcoming to help the affected communities to recover fully from the disaster.”


Mr Sylvester Kumawu, the Assembly Member of Salakope Electoral Area, who received the donations on behalf of the victims in the three communities, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, expressed gratitude to Mr Tanko for the kind gesture that would alleviate the food challenges of the tidal wave victims in the areas.
He said that the affected communities were still expecting and looking forward for government intervention to begin the continuation of the phase two of Blekusu sea defense wall project to protect the rest of their properties as well as lives of the residents.
He also commended Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, for the efforts, support and various roles played to ensure that the affected communities restored their hope.
Mr Kumawu suggested that other urgent measures which include building of temporary structures to accommodate the victims, among others should be put in place to prevent further destruction during the rainy season.
He said that the donations from Mr Tanko Atokple were timely and a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting the people of the area in times of needs and difficulties.
He promised that the relief items would be distributed equally to benefit all, which would go a long way to provide some comfort to the affected families.
Some affected communities GNA interacted with have expressed appreciation about the donation which they said would help alleviate some of the challenges faced and appealed to philanthropists, groups of companies, corporate organisations and the government for more support to help rebuild their lives.
Present at the donation ceremony were Mr Dodzi Kofi Aidam, the Volta Regional Deputy Director of NADMO, Mr Vacus Dogbe, Regional NADMO Operations Officer, and others.
