Kadjebi (O/R), May 24-GNA-Mr Rashad Shaibu, the Kadjebi District Director of Department of Food and Agriculture, has indicated that the directorate has deployed only six agricultural extension officers.
This results in a ratio of one extension officer to 5,000 farmers.
He mentioned that these officers were recruited in 2019, and had it not been for this recruitment, the district would have had only one staff member now.
Mr Shaibu disclosed this at a meeting in Kadjebi in the Oti Region.
He said that the agriculture extension officers served as a vital link between the farmers, facilitating the sustainability of the agriculture sector.
Mr Shaibu stated that they provided farmers with the latest information and techniques in agricultural practices, helping them improve crop yields, manage pests, and adopt sustainable farming methods, therefore, their presence was essential.
He, therefore, appealed to the government to post more agriculture extension officers to enable farmers to get the necessary information to make informed decisions.
