Adjei-Kojo, May 19, GNA – Ms Charity Dela Siameh, the Assembly Member for Adjei-Kojo in the Tema West Municipality, has called for the urgent expansion and improvement of drainage systems in the area to reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
Ms Siameh said the existing drainage infrastructure was inadequate, resulting in frequent flooding that affected residents, especially those living in low-lying areas.
She told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that unless swift action was taken to expand the drains and remove obstructions, residents in flood-prone parts of Adjei-Kojo would continue to suffer property damage anytime it rains heavily.
She explained that at Kanewu, a wall built by some company had reduced the drainage size, preventing the free flow of rainwater, forcing the water into people’s homes, adding that slopes in some areas in Solomon City also posed a risk to those at the lower end, causing water to settle in their homes when it rains.
The Assembly member explained that although the flood did not affect all the communities in the electoral area, improving the drainage systems would not only protect lives and property but also support economic activities in the area.
She noted that although minor drainage works had been undertaken in the past, they had not been enough to deal with the increasing volume of rainwater caused by changing weather patterns and urban development.
Ms Siameh said the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) would be visiting the affected victims to express solidarity and assess the extent of the damage, as well as to strategies possibles ways to support victims to recover from their losses.
