Volta MDAs tasked to urgently address road congestion, traffic safety challenges

By Edward Williams

Ho, April 29, GNA – Mr James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister has tasked all Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the region to urgently address road congestion and traffic safety challenges.

He said the Volta Regional Coordinating Council would support intensified road safety campaigns ongoing in the region towards its success.

Mr Gunu said this when a delegation from the National Road Safety Authority paid a courtesy call to him.

He said there would be a close collaboration with the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD), transport operators, the Assemblies and other stakeholders to decongest market areas and enhance traffic management.

Mr Abraham Amaliba, Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), who led a delegation, said the call formed part of a nationwide tour to reinforce the Authority’s regulatory mandate.

He said the delegation had concerns over market road congestion calling for urgent need for stronger road safety enforcement.

Mr Amaliba noted that compliance notices had been issued to institutions, with enforcement measures set to follow for non-compliance.

Mr Augustus Awity, Chief Director, Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) emphasised that Assemblies must relocate traders occupying streets and pedestrian walkways back into the main markets to restore safe and orderly movement.
