Over 20 candidates to contest in GOC elections on April 26

By Francis Ofori

Accra, April.19, GNA- The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has announced that over 20 candidates will vie for top positions in the upcoming elections slated for Saturday April 26,2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The tall list candidates will seek to run the affairs of the Olympic movement for the next four years in a highly anticipated-elective congress.

Renowned Sports Administrator and former Captain of Ghana’s Hockey National team, Richard Akpokavie would be in contention for the presidency position against Mr. Michael Odum Aggrey, former President of Ghana Golf Association.

The two candidates are hopeful of securing the enviable slot after months of intense campaigning with loads of promises being whispered into the ears of delegates.

Elsewhere, Mr. Mawuko Afadzinu, President of the Ghana Table Tennis Federation, Mr. Frederick Lartey, President of Ghana Taekwondo, Mr Bawa Fuseini President of Ghana Athletics, and Mr Samuel Tetteh Ayer from the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA), would run unopposed for the first Vice President, Second Vice President, Deputy Secretary-General, and representative of affiliated bodies positions respectively.

The persons named above have been automatically elected to their respective positions awaiting swearing-in.

This is because article 14 (a) of the guidelines to the GOC elections states that, “Where at the close of nomination for election to the Board of GOC; Only one candidate is nominated for a position, the candidate shall be declared elected”.

Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, outgoing president of the Ghana Olympic Committee speaking at the last extraordinary congress over the weekend called on delegates to elect competent leaders who will uplift the image of the association in the next four years.

He said voting for individuals based on their credibility, integrity, selflessness as well as their records and achievements would go a long way to ensure that the good brand of the GOC would be maintained.
