Accra, April 30, GNA – Mr Keneth Adu Poku, the Headmaster of Osei Adutwum Senior High School at Jachie in the Ashanti Region, has pledged to ensure strict supervision of the distribution of the free sanitary pads in the school.
He said based on the comprehensive measures put in place to ensure the smooth distribution of the pads, it would be difficult for anyone to divert or steal the items.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Headmaster said the school had a girl-child education unit, headed by the senior house mistress, who would coordinate the distribution processes.
He said about 700 girls were expected to receive the pads out of a total population of over 1,000 students, both day and boarding.
More than two million girls in basic and senior high schools across the country are expected to benefit from the initiative.
Mr Poku said the school was in a semi-urban area, with a lot of the students finding it difficult to afford sanitary pads.
He expressed optimism that the school would put in place strategies and modalities to ensure that all the female students got the pad.
The Government on Thursday, April 24, 2025, launched the free sanitary pads policy in Accra as part of a broader strategy to promote menstrual health and hygiene for adolescent girls.
The initiative forms part of the President’s 120-Day Social Contract with Ghanaians, aimed at improving school attendance, reducing absenteeism among girls, and enhancing academic performance.
The initiative is not a one-time intervention but rather a commitment by the Government to provide sanitary pads every month, ensuring that no girl misses school due to her menstrual cycle.
The 2025 budget statement allocated GH¢292.4 million to commence the distribution of the free sanitary pads to female students in primary and secondary schools.
After the national launch, there will be regional and district launches to start the distribution of the pads.
