GRIDCo Senior Staff raise concerns over filling key positions in GRIDCo with external persons

Tamale, April 29, GNA – Senior Staff Association (SSA) of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has raised concerns with the recruitment of external persons to fill key positions in the company (GRIDCo) over the last three years saying it breached the company’s conditions of service.

Mr Wisdom Kojo Adenyo, Chairman, SSA of GRIDCo, who raised the concerns about the practice, emphasised that “recruiting new officers and placing them over and above comparatively more competent and experienced serving staff,” if not managed well, could demoralise staff and result in staff disengagement and low productivity.

He was addressing the 7th Biennial Delegates Congress of GRIDCo’s SSA, held in Tamale.

The three-day event, attended by members and some Management Members of GRIDCo, was also to elect new officers to lead the SSA of GRIDCo for the next two years.

Mr Adenyo said “It is important to remind ourselves of the tussle between the SSA leadership and Management over clear breaches of our Conditions of Service particularly with the recruitment of external persons to fill key positions in the Company over the last three years.”

He added that “These recruitments, apart from not being done in line with our Conditions of Service, also have huge implications on the Company’s wage bill resulting from the Company’s low cashflow.”

He said, “There is a dire need to take steps to protect our Conditions of Service on which our survival and welfare depend.”

Mr Adenyo mentioned some projects undertaken by the SSA of GRIDCo, which included the establishment of GRIDCo Credit Union (GCU) Scheme and the ongoing construction of the SSA Office.

He said as part of the GCU, shares had been floated, accounts had been opened, and savings deductions had started.

He called on members to pick forms and buy shares to be part of the GCU.

Meanwhile, Mr Adenyo, the incumbent Chairman, retained his position after the elections.

Other elected officers were Mr Guggisberg Asante, National Vice Chairman, Mr Morrison Edem Essah, National General Secretary, Miss Vida Aheto Abakwam, National Assistant General Secretary, and Mr Saani Sulemana, National Treasurer.

Mr Alhassan Mustapha, Chief Labour Officer, Northern Region, swore in the elected National Executive Officers together with the Branch Chairmen forming the National Executive Committee of the SSA of GRIDCo for the next two years.

The SSA of GRIDCo was established shortly after the company’s operationalisation in 2008.

Its primary goals include developing Senior Staff, safeguarding their economic and social rights, and serving as their representative within the company.
