Residents of Fenyito struggle for water and other social amenities

Fenyito (VR), March 14, GNA – Residents of Fenyito in the Benadzi Electoral Area in the Anloga district of the Volta Region, are facing serious challenges regarding access to necessities including potable water, electricity and roads.

The community lacks a dam and piped water, forcing residents to travel long distances to nearby communities in search of water and other important amenities.

Mr Frederick Fiadonu, the Assembly Member of the area, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the community’s challenges extended beyond water scarcity.

“The absence of electricity and roads has severely impacted the residents’ quality of life. Students are suffering by walking long distance to access water before going to school at Benadzi and other communities and the situation affect their academic performance,” he said.

He said the situation was exacerbated by the drying up of dams, leaving residents to share the limited water available with animals like chickens, goats, and cattle and the situation demanded immediate attention to address the community’s pressing demands.

He said the struggles faced by Fenyito residents were a stark reminder of the disparities in access to basic amenities in rural communities, which included good roads, portable water, and functional electricity among others and were essential for a decent quality of life.

“The absence of these amenities has far-reaching consequences, including impacts on health, education, and economic opportunities and I have put these challenges before the assembly severely but without a lasting solution,” he said.

Mr Fiadonu appealed to philanthropists, corporate entities, individuals and the government to invest in infrastructure development, such as roads, dams, and piped water systems, as well as initiatives to improve access to education and healthcare.

He also appealed for support to the Fenyito and other deprived communities for initiatives that would provide training and capacity-building programmes, to foster partnerships between local government, civil society, and the private sector to improve quality of life in the areas.
