Accra, May 11, GNA – The Ghana Police Service (GPS) on Friday received two Ghanaian women who had been lured to Nigeria through an online romance scam and subsequently kidnapped.
The victims, Evelyn Serwaa Konadu and Anastasia Baidoo, were rescued in a collaborative operation involving the GPS, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Signals Bureau.
Their return to Ghana via Kotoka International Airport on May 9, 2025, was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
At a media briefing, DCOP Donkor warned the public against falling victim to online fraudsters. She urged individuals not to share personal or financial information with strangers and to report any suspicious behaviour promptly.
I Inspector General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, commended the officers for their swift response during the rescue operation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Yaako Donkor reaffirmed the police’s commitment to public safety, noting that the victims—who are assisting with ongoing investigations—are stable, undergoing medical examinations, and will receive counselling.
She explained that the women were lured online by individuals posing as suitors from abroad. After gaining their trust, the perpetrators kidnapped, tied, assaulted them, and demanded a ransom.
A viral video showed the victims pleading with their families to pay GH₵500,000 for their release.
Police intelligence led to the arrest of eight suspects, including both Ghanaians and Nigerians.
