Adidome (V/R), March 04, GNA – Mr Guggisberg Fiagbenu, the Assembly Member of the Adidome Central Electoral Area in Central Tongu district, has called for immediate action to address growing concerns of safety of boat operations on the Volta Lake.

Mr Fiagbenu, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said there was the need for boat operators to exercise caution and professionalism when transporting passengers across the lake.

He cited the lack of life jackets at landing beaches and overcrowding on boats as major concerns that pose a significant risk to passengers’ lives.

Mr Fiagbenu stressed that the safety of passengers was paramount and that boat operators must take responsibility for ensuring their safety.

He also called on passengers to report any safety concerns or incidents to the relevant authorities.

The Assembly Member’s call for improved safety measures had been welcomed by some residents and boat passengers, who had earlier expressed concerns about the safety of boat operations on the Volta Lake.

Mr Fiagbenu said the move was mainly aimed at preventing boat disasters on the lake, which have resulted in the loss of lives in recent years after several boats capsized while traveling.

Mr Fiagbenu has announced plans to engage with the National Disaster Management Organisation, the Navy, and other stakeholders to develop strategies to address these issues and draft bylaws to regulate boat operations in the enclave.

He cautioned that “Our helmsmen who are the boat operators should please take caution and conduct themselves as professionals and earn the respect of the community.

The community will keep their eyes peeled on their day-to-day activities from today.”

This, he said, was expected to improve safety standards at landing beaches and reduce the risk of accidents on the Volta Lake.
