Adidome (V/R), Feb. 19, GNA – Abochannel Media Group, an Adidome-based radio station in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region, has been cited among six radio stations operating illegally in the country.

According to a media advisory from the Ministry of Communication, Abochannel Media Group, along with five other radio stations, has been operating without valid frequency authorizations, in contravention of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).

The Minister, Mr Samuel Nartey George, has charged the National Communications Authority to take necessary lawful actions against media houses operating a broadcasting service without a valid frequency authorisation and to ensure that stringent steps were initiated to halt all unauthorized transmissions.

The six radio stations, including Abochannel Media Group, were identified as operating illegally after a recent audit by the NCA.

The other five stations are located in Sunyani, Tamale, Bibiani, Techiman, and Nkrankwanta.

The directive has sparked concerns among the active listeners in the community, who rely on the station for local news, entertainment, and information.

The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations has stated that it was continuing its review of the frequency authorization audit and would provide further directives in due course.

In the meantime, the Ministry has advised all frequency authorization holders to comply strictly with the terms of their authorizations to avoid similar enforcement actions.

The development has also raised questions about the regulatory environment for broadcasting in Ghana and the need for stricter enforcement of the laws governing the industry.
