Papaye (O/R) Jan. 9, GNA – A farmer’s livelihood was left in tatters after herd itinerant cattle invaded his farm, destroying thousands of yams and cassava in the process at Papaye, a farming community under Krachi East Municipality.
Ubor Nsando, the farmer told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that, the cattle, which were being grazed in the nearby area somehow found their way into the yam barn causing widespread destruction to the tubers.
A visit to the farm by GNA has revealed the extent of the destruction caused by the cattle invading cattle on the farm, destroying a large portion of the yam barn and damaging the yams.
The GNA team witnessed the devastating scene, where the yam barn was largely destroyed and after the cattle had gained access to the crops.
The scene was one of utter destruction, with yams scattered all over the barn and the cattle’s footprints visible on the ground.
However, what was even more shocking was the sight of the cassava farm, which was almost entirely destroyed.
The GNA witnessed how about five-acres of the cassava farm had been destroyed by the animals, leaving nothing but a trail of destruction in their wake.
The farmer, Ubor Nsando, who was visibly distraught told the GNA that he had invested heavily in cultivating the cassava and yams, and that the destruction caused by the cattle had left him with nothing.
The incident, which is pervasive in the area and Oti region, has highlighted the ongoing conflicts between farmers and herdsmen in the area, and the need for urgent action before it degenerates into bloody conflicts.
