Nkwanta (O/R) Jan 28, GNA – The ongoing conflict at Nkwanta South of the Oti Region has brought the educational sector to a standstill, with the closure of schools certain to affect the academic future of thousands of students.
Mr Jonathan Korsinah, the Nkwanta South Municipal Director of Education, disclosed that 24 public and 18 private schools had been forced to close, affecting approximately 9,237 students.
He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that, four schools in volatile areas would remain closed until security assurances were given for teachers.
Additionally, over 579 public school teachers had fled to safer locations due to concerns for their safety, Mr Korsinah said and emphasised the importance of a secure environment for educators, warning that without adequate protection, the quality of education at Nkwanta South would continue to deteriorate.
He said although the education directorate was committed to restoring access to quality education, this could only be achieved if teachers felt safe and supported.
However, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkwanta South, Mr Geoffrey Kini, has advised prioritising safety over the rushed reopening of schools.
The MP emphasised the need for lasting peace and called on parents, authorities, and community leaders to work together to create a stable environment for learning, adding that collective efforts was necessary to restore peace and revive education in Nkwanta South.
The situation remains a pressing concern, with the academic future of thousands of students hanging in the balance.
