Wenchi, (Bono), Jan. 24, GNA – Alhaji Abdallah Ahmed Abadallah, a former National Treasurer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the Local Government Ministry to do more to curb the growing ‘monetization’ associated with the confirmation of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

Describing the situation as an affront to democratic principles, he urged the government to also ensure that traditional authorities were actively involved in the selection and confirmation of the MMDCEs by the various assemblies.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Wenchi in the Bono Region, Alhaji Abdallah, also the Chief Executive Officer of the Progressive Modern Construction limited (PMC), said the current ‘monetization’ that had characterised the MMDCEs confirmation breed corruption, inimical to growth and sustainable development .

Touching on political party funding, he advocated reforms in the country’s political landscape, allowing political parties to engage in profit making ventures.

Reforms in political party financing is required to allow, especially the minor political parties, to do something economically viable to fund their activities and operations, Alhaji Abdallah said.

He, however, added that such economic activities of political parties must be regulated.

“The political system now which demands voluntary contributions has outlived its usefulness”, he stated, suggesting that system must allowed the political parties to engage in viable economic activities like commercial farming and cash crop production to fund themselves.
