Ejura (Ash), Jan. 13 GNA – The Ejura Traditional Council has called for immediate investigation, arrest and prosecution of criminals who caused mayhem resulting in the destruction of valuable properties in the community.

Some youth groups from the Ejura Zongo had at the weekend attack the Ejura police station, assaulted officers, released suspects in custody and set the place on fire, resulting in the destruction of the police station, cars and other valuable items on the compound.

The incident was triggered by the death of a suspect, who was arrested by the police on charges of stealing.

The suspect, identified as Masawudu Shaibu, fell sick at the police station and later died when he was rushed to the hospital.

The youth suspected beatings and mistreatment on Masawudu by the police while he was in custody.

Barima Osei Hwedie II, the Ejurahene, told a meeting of key stakeholders after the incident that, the Traditional Council was deeply concern about the violent and criminal behaviour of the youth and called on the police and other security agencies to take immediate steps to bring the perpetrators to face justice.

The meeting was attended by the Member of Parliament for the area, Zongo Chiefs, police, representatives of other security agencies, as well as community and opinion leaders.

The primary objective of the meeting was to delve into the underlying causes of the unrest and devise strategies to establish lasting peace in the area.

Barimah Osei Hwedie expressed dismay over the wanton destruction of properties and implored the community leaders to show concern and talk to their people to know how to coexist with others in their various communities, to maintain peace at all times.

He underscored the significance of allowing law enforcement agencies to execute their duties without hindrance, saying that “we cannot condone such acts of vandalism and lawlessness. Let us remain composed and allow the due process of law to prevail”.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Jude Cobinah, who is the Ashanti North Regional Police Commander, providing an update on the security measures being implemented in the area, said over 100 police officers and other security officers had been deployed to restore law and order and uphold peace in the area.

“We are collaborating closely with all stakeholders to restore peace in Ejura and its environs,” he stated.

He said it was imperative for all citizens to abide by the law and refrain from actions that could result in lawlessness.
