Abaasa (C/R), Jan 23, GNA – Nana Oboakomah I, the Queen mother of Gomoa Abaasa has cautioned young girls to abstain from early sex and pursue higher education aggressively to positively contribute to the progress of the society in future.
She said education must be the essential tool to serve as a catalyst that would deliver them from abject poverty.
“I am urging young girls in the Gomoa Central District to as much as possible, stay focused in the pursuit of higher education to avoid early pregnancy’’ Nana Oboakomah said.
The Queen mother was addressing a colourful durbar of Chiefs and people of Gomoa Abaasa to climax the week-long Awukukese festival at Abaasa in the Central region.
The Queen mother advised women to take advantage of the passage of Affirmative Action Bill by Parliament and take up leadership roles both politically and socially.
She further encouraged JHS and SHS girls who got impregnate during schooling not to relent but to rise and pursue their education to the highest level.
The Abaasahemaa who is the caretaker of the town, called for peace and reconciliation among the inhabitants to ensure socio-economic transformation and urged the youth to endeavour to fully participate in the Annual Awukukese festival to enable them to become abreast with customs and traditions bequeathed to them by their forefathers.
The Queenmother said the 2025 Awukukese festival was for fund raising towards the construction of an eight’ bedroom teachers’ quarters to ease teachers of the struggles of commuting daily to and from Agona Swedru and Winneba-Junction to school.
Nana Osompa Nyamekye II, Nsafuahene of Gomoa Akyempem Traditional Area urged the youth of Abaasa to get actively involved in the developmental projects being undertaken by the Chiefs and the people.
He said it was sad to note that some youth only used the celebration for merry making and refused to contribute their quota towards developmental projects.
Nana Osompa Nyamekye, who is also the Chief of Otapirow, near Agona Swedru said Abaasa was now free of chieftaincy disputed and therefore all must take advantage to contribute their quota towards the growth of the town.
He stated that it was their civic responsibility as citizens to get involved in the provision of structures and many others to give the town a facelift because the government could not shoulder it alone.
Nana Bondzie Essuman I, Gyantuahene of Gomoa Brofoyedur, who co -chaired the function urged citizens abroad to visit home regularly and give towards building a vibrant town.
He commended the chiefs and people of Abaasa for the construction of the teachers’ project, saying it would go a long way to motivate teachers to give up their best to enhance quality teaching and learning.
Nana Bondzie Essuman said education was expensive, but illiteracy was more and praised the chiefs and planning committee of the festival for the initiative.
Mr Kofi Esuon, Assemblyman for Abonyi-Abaasa-Ayensuadze Electoral Area, said the week-long celebration was to mobilise resources to support developmental projects and therefore appealed to the youth to support the initiative.
