Twifo Praso (C/R), Dec 20, GNA – To prevent cholera outbreak in the Twifo Ati-Morkwa District of the Central Region, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Chairman, Mr Hakim Addae, has cleared a huge refuse dump near the Twifo Praso Polyclinic.
Although cholera has not been reported in the district, Mr Addae believed that prevention was key, particularly when the World Health Organisation is emphasising on addressing cholera as a preventable disease.
The refuse dump had become a nuisance, blocking the road to the polyclinic and causing difficulties to commuters, aside the strong stench emanating from it.
By evacuating the refuse and cleaning-up the site in a rigorous exercise, Mr Addae said it would improve sanitation and enhance the wellbeing of residents.
He said being a leader of the party in the constituency, he would not wait for the President-elect, Mr John Dramani Mahama, and the members of Parliament to be sworn in before tackling the community’s concerns, hence the action.
Meanwhile, residents are delighted with the gesture, praising the NDC Chairman for the efforts and a job well done.
They said the refuse dump was a nightmare, especially during rainfall, when a pungent smell with its attendant houseflies brought discomfort to residents, causing various health issues, adding that its removal was a great relief.
Dr Emmanuel Partey, Assistant Director of Health for Twifo Ati-Morkwa, said the importance of good hygiene and clean water usage could not be over-emphasised, especially during the yuletide when cholera was wreaking havoc in some regions.
“By taking these precautions, the community can enjoy a healthy and happy holiday season,” he said.
