GFL expresses worry over parliamentary delays to approve first quarter budget

Tema, Dec. 20, GNA -The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has expressed worry at the delay in approving the first quarter budget for the year 2025 following the failure of Parliament to progress on the process.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, recalled the house to convene from Monday, December 16, 2024, to address some issues, including tax exemptions and the presentation and approval of the mini-budget for the first fiscal quarter for the year 2025.

The process has, however, been delayed due to some issues, including the reported absence of Dr. Amin Adam, the Finance Minister, from parliamentary proceedings for the consideration of the budget.

Mr Abraham Koomson, the Secretary-General of the GFL, reacting to the development, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that failure to approve the budget could affect the payment of salaries of workers and other important government works.

Mr Koomson called on the majority side to desist from tactics to derail the work of the incoming government by deliberately delaying the process due to their personal issues.

He said, “They must forget about their massive defeat in the elections and think right about their parliamentary responsibilities.”

He added that “the earlier they understood their current situation and acted well, the better to avoid the wrath of public sector employees.”

Mr Koomson said workers had suffered under the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) administration for the past eight years and would not tolerate such moves to cause more pain to them by preventing the payment of their salaries due to their failure to honour their parliamentary responsibilities.
