Bekwai (Ash), Dec. 20, GNA – Drivers have been urged to prioritise safety and avoid any acts that can put passengers and other road users in danger in the run-up to the Christmas festivities.
Mr Erasmus Baah, the Asante Bekwai District Director of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), who made the call, said it was important for drivers to adhere to road safety regulations.
He also urged them to desist from acts such as alcoholism, over-speeding, reckless driving and other infractions that could put other road users into danger, particularly, during the busy festive season.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, he said drivers needed to be responsible in their choices during this period, saying alcohol and drugs impaired one’s ability to drive safely and could lead to serious accidents.
“Let us all ensure that we keep our roads safe for everyone by avoiding impaired driving,” he said.
Mr Baah also called on drivers to ensure that their vehicles were in proper condition before setting out on long trips, saying that “Check tire pressure, fluid levels and brakes to avoid unexpected breakdowns or accidents,” he recommended.
He further advised motorists to follow all traffic regulations, such as adhering to speed limits, wearing seat belts, and avoiding reckless driving.
The roads would be busier than usual, and it was important that everyone followed the rules and be mindful of other road users, he said.
Mr Baah further cautioned drivers against over speeding, overtaking recklessly, or not following traffic signs, which could lead to preventable accidents.
He reminded parents and guardians to avoid allowing children under 18 years old to drive because it was illegal for minors to drive under Ghana’s laws, however those who had attained the required age for driving must secure valid driver’s licenses.
