Japekrom (B/R), Nov. 12, GNA-Mr Emmanuel Oduro, the Jaman South Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Bono Region, has called for active involvement of the youth in sustaining the prevailing peace of the nation.

As the chunk of the nation’s population, he said the role of the youth in deepening national peace ahead of the General Election remained unparalleled.

Mr Oduro made the call when speaking at a youth engagement meeting on the European Union-funded Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism project being implemented by the NCCE and held at Japekrom in the Municipality.

The Jaman South Municipal office of NCCE organised the meeting which sought to imbibe a high sense of patriotism among the youth drawn from various youth groups and to increase awareness of their civic responsibilities.

That would position them well to promote peace and contribute to countering violent extremism in the area.

Mr Oduro said if not checked, violent extremism could plunge the nation into chaos, and stressed the need for heightened security, especially in the Ghana-Ivorian border communities in the area.

He reiterated the commission’s dedication to combating extremist activities by intensifying civic education initiatives aimed at instilling a shared sense of nationalism in the minds of the youth.

The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Sampson, the Drobo District Police Commander, said the police was fully prepared to maintain peace and order, ahead of the December 7, polls, saying, comprehensive plans had been put in place to also protect individuals and property.

He warned that troublemakers would not be spared, saying the police in the area were on high alert to deal with troublemakers, before, during and after the elections.

The Reverend Michael Attah Darkwah, the Japekrom District Minister of the Ascension Presbyterian Church, called for the need to ensure a peaceful co-existence and inter-faith tolerance.

He said embracing divergent views, and respect remained essential in promoting peace and unity in the area and urged the youth to serve as ambassadors of peace.

The participants pledged their commitment to uphold and defend the prevailing peace of the area and assured their readiness to support the security services in maintaining law and order too.
