NDC NEC endorses Prof Naana Jane as running-mate

By Christopher Arko

Accra, March 6, GNA – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is Thursday expected to announce Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate to John Dramani Mahama for the 2024 General Election.

This follows her endorsement by the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Council of Elders, sources close to party, have told the GNA.

This will be the second time the former Minister of Education and Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast will partner former President Mahama on the ticket of the NDC for a major election.

Mr Mahama, after the 2020 endorsement of his running mate by the NEC, described Prof Opoku-Agyemang as: “God-fearing, a distinguished scholar, a conscientious public servant & a role model.”

Before her selection, several names were floated as potential running mates, which included Julius Debrah, a former Chief of Staff; Dr Kwabena Duffour, a former Finance Minister and Governor of Bank of Ghana; Mr Kwame Awuah Darko, a former Chief Executive of Tema Oil Refinery and BOST, Kojo Bonsu, a former Mayor of Kumasi; Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, the NDC Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey Constituency.

The former President submitted the name of his preferred running mate to the National Executive Committee and the Council of Elders of the Party for scrutiny.

The Party, through its General Secretary, Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, in an earlier statement, indicated that the NEC and the Council of Elders of the Party were preparing to deliberate on Mr Mahama’s choice.

The official announcement of his running-mate to the public is, thus, scheduled for March 7, 2024.

Apology

The Ghana News Agency apologises to our cherished subscribers over an error which inadvertently found its way into our story headlined, “NDC NEC endorses Prof Jane Naana as running mate”.

Former President Mahama’s tweet following the endorsement of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang by the Party in 2020 was wrongly sourced as a comment he made in 2024.

This was purely an error, which is very regrettable.
