Sunyani Municipal COVID-19 task-force undertakes night exercises

Sunyani, May 06, GNA – The Sunyani Municipal COVID-19 Taskforce is undertaking night enforcement exercises to ensure that drinking spots and restaurants adhere to social and physical distancing protocols to stem the spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the Municipality.

They are also ensuring the compulsory wearing of nose masks by taxi and other commercial drivers as well as traders, such as food vendors who operate at night in the municipality.

Superintendent Haruna Alhassan, the Commander of the taskforce, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Wednesday, said the taskforce had intensified the night enforcement exercise in the various communities and neighbourhoods.

He expressed concern about driver indiscipline on the highways, saying the taskforce during its normal routine night patrols on Tuesday, May 5, impounded a Diesel Truck with registration number GT 4404-11.

Supt. Alhassan said the driver of the truck, one Bernard Gyabaah, now on the run was over-speeding on the Abesim-Sunyani highway and ignored signals by the taskforce to stop.

He said the taskforce became suspicious and chased the truck and during that upon reaching Dormaa-Akwamu in the Dormaa East District, the driver of the truck stopped and bolted.

Mr Alhassan said consequently the taskforce impounded the truck and brought it to the Regional Police headquarters in Sunyani.

He said the driver of the truck hit and caused extensive damages to the Berekum Police highway Patrol Nissan Pick-up vehicle with registration number GP 405, and another Nissan Pick-up vehicle with registration number GI 70 belonging to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) which were all chasing the truck.

He said the taskforce believed the driver was hiding around communities in the Dormaa East District and appealed to the public to provide information on strangers and people with questionable characters to the Police.

He said the taskforce retrieved a driver’s license, MP3 radio, Itel mobile phone, Laptop computer, a black school bag, a note book, bunch of keys and a pass book when it brought the truck to the Command around 0100 hours on Wednesday.
