Bongo (U/E), Nov. 03, GNA – Mrs Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has urged nurses and midwives to prioritise their financial security in retirement by making voluntary contributions to the Association’s retirement fund.

She said the GRNMA retirement fund, popularly known as the Nurses’ Fund, was established to provide members with additional financial support upon retirement and should not be regarded as a source of funds for pre-retirement withdrawals.

Addressing members of the Association at a mini durbar in the Bongo District during a two-day working visit to the Upper East Region, Mrs Ofori-Ampofo explained that the minimum monthly contribution to the fund remained GH¢50.

She said members were, however, free to increase their contributions based on their individual financial capacity.

“The fund is targeted towards your retirement. We want you to be financially secured when you are no more working and you attain the age of 60 or go on early retirement at the age of 55,” she said.

Mrs Ofori-Ampofo stressed that no member was under any obligation to increase contributions to the fund.

She said that decision should be based on individual financial circumstances, “If you do not want to increase, if you want to maintain the GH¢50, nobody is forcing you. But it is towards your retirement,” she stated.

The GRNMA President cautioned members against misinformation regarding the fund, particularly suggestions that increased contributions would make it possible to access withdrawals before retirement.

“Please, if anybody tells you that, not under my watch. There is nothing like that,” she emphasized.

Mrs Ofori-Ampofo further advised members to regularly update their beneficiary information to reflect changes in their personal and family circumstances, including marriage and the birth of children.

She explained that maintaining accurate beneficiary records was essential to ensuring that the appropriate persons received benefits when required.

The GRNMA President also encouraged nurses and midwives to monitor their monthly payslips to ensure that membership dues were being deducted correctly.

She said the Association’s welfare programmes, including the health fund, loan schemes, death benefits and land acquisition schemes, were designed to support members throughout their working lives.

Mrs Ofori-Ampofo, who was elected President of the Association in November 2019, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve members and pledged her continued support for the Association even after leaving office.

The GRNMA, which marked its 66th anniversary in March 2026, is preparing towards its 70th anniversary celebration in 2030.
