Akyempim (W/R), Nov 06, GNA-Golden Star Wassa Mine has for the fourth consecutive time won the National Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition organized by the Ghana Chamber of Mines in partnership with the St. John’s Ambulance Service and the Minerals Commission.

The competition, which precedes the annual mining industry awards, saw Golden Star Wassa Mine wining both the practical and oral competitions.

The competition is held every year to demonstrate how industrial health, safety, and emergency response help safeguard lives.

The theme for this year was “Safety First, Safety Always”.

The annual competition bridged the gap between mining operations and the public by featuring two categories: the Mine teams, specialized employees trained to handle high-stakes industrial medical scenarios, and the Community teams, comprising residents from local host communities equipped with primary life-saving skills.

During the practicals, the competing teams are given first aid and safety scenarios to enact and resolve the challenges.

The finals of this year’s practical competition was hosted and won by Gold Star Wassa Mine on October 31 beating off competition from Asante Gold Bibiani, Adamus Resources, and Asante Gold Chirano after three gruelling rounds of first aid and safety scenarios to emerge winners with 57. 5 points with Asante Gold Bibiani second with 53 points, Adamus Resources third with 50.5 points, and Asante Gold Chirano fourth with 48.5 points.

A week after that, the orals took place on the popular WHAT DO YOU KNOW programme on national radio and television.

Gold Star Wassa again proved too strong for their opponents by winning the WHAT DO YOU KNOW contest and subsequently crowned as champions of the Inter Mines First Aid and Safety Competition for 2026.

In an interview, an elated Chief Executive Officer of Gold Star Wassa Mine, Mr. Lianghua Lin, stressed that “First aid is a powerful expression of humanity.

When someone is injured or in distressed, what matters most is not their company, nationality or background. What matters is that someone is ready and willing to help. That is the spirit we must celebrate today”.

The annual event addresses critical economic and social issues within the extractive industry. Emergency response is a business-critical asset because immediate first-aid readiness mitigates risk, protects infrastructure, and eliminates operational downtime caused by unforeseen incidents.

It was the 16th edition of the competition, and Gold Star Wassa Mine’s latest success has extended its unmatched record to 10 Zonal Championship titles and four consecutive national titles.
