Takoradi, Nov. 06, GNA – Residents at Akwidaa, a fishing community in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region, have urged the government to make allocation in the 2027 budget to construct the road linking the community to Agona-Nkwanta, the Municipal capital.
According to them, successive governments have failed to construct the road despite several campaign promises leaving that stretch in a very deplorable state for years.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed during a recent visit to the community that the road has been riddled with gullies, and deep potholes, making commuting along that stretch uncomfortable, risking lives, and impacting access to healthcare and other essential services in the Municipal capital.
Some of the residents who shared their expectations ahead of the 2027 Budget Statement and Economic Policy presentation by the Finance Minister, said the government must make provisions to construct their road to help make commuting easier along that stretch.
Mr Kofi Cosmos, Akwidaa Local Vice Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), in an interview with the GNA said the poor state of the road made life difficult for the people living in communities along that stretch, negatively affecting their livelihoods.
He said: “The situation even becomes worse on rainy days because vehicles are not able to navigate the deplorable nature of the road, and this means that some adjoining communities are cut-off sometimes.”
He noted that they also spent much of their income on maintenance and repair works on their vehicles.
“We expect the government to consider us too and allocate some funds in next year’s budget to construct our road so that we can be free from our daily struggles,” Mr Cosmos added.
Others expressed similar sentiments, and said the state of the road was negatively affecting their daily lives.
They appealed to the government to construct the road to help bring relief to them when plying that stretch.
