Effiakuma (W/R), Oct. 26, GNA – Mr Yusif Usman, the Acting Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has urged women to take keen interest in issues of transparency and accountability, and speak against wrongdoing in their communities without fear of victimisation.

He said this when the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal NCCE engaged women groups to empower them with knowledge on anti-corruption, Whistle Blowers Act, domestic violence, and legal frameworks in combating corruption and related practices in the country.

The engagement formed part of the second phase of a project that sought to empower young people with practical knowledge on the rule of law, civic rights, legal frameworks such as the Whistle-blower Act, and their role in promoting transparency and accountability.

The project is being implemented in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and co-funded by the European Union (EU).

The event, held at Effiakuma on the theme: “Civic Engagement on the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption”, was attended by representatives from the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians’ Association, Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers’ Association, and market women among other groups.

Mr Usman said the project formed part of coordinated educational campaigns that targeted women to champion the fight against corruption in their communities.

He said women were a crucial demographic in Ghana’s anti-corruption and governance landscape with many of them interacting regularly with public systems and officials, hence, the need to empower them with practical knowledge to become active champions of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law within their communities.

He asked the participants to be active advocates against corruption, stating that it was their civic duty and responsibility to speak against wrongdoing without fear of victimization.

Mr Evans Amoateng, an Officer from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), took the participants through the mandates of the Commission, and urged them to report any acts of corruption and related practices to CHRAJ and other relevant state institutions for action.

Mr Lan Kwame Tugbenu, Deputy Western Regional NCCE Director, advised participants to be responsible and law-abiding citizens and help build a prosperous nation for all.
