Wenchi, (Bono), Oct. 5, GNA-Wenchi Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has sensitized women groups in the municipality on corruption and rule of law, asking them to contribute to the fight against the menace.
The day’s sensitization was attended by market women and traders, artisans as well as women in faith-based organisations including Persons with Disabilities.
It was on the theme: “Strengthening the rule of law and fighting against corruption in Ghana” and supported by the European Union and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).
Speaking at the sensitization forum at Wenchi in the Bono Region, Mr Francis Cudjoe, the Wenchi Municipal Director of NCCE said the event formed part of the commission’s efforts to empower the citizenry to play an active role in promoting accountability and social justice.
He advised the women to change their perception about corruption, saying that corruption ought not to be viewed as a problem that involved only public officials.
Mr Cudjoe said corruption occurred in every sector of the economy, stressing that the contributions of women in fighting the menace remained integral.
He advised the women to also remain law-abiding and contribute their quota towards ensuring a corruption free society.
Chief Superintendent of Police Mr George Kwakye, the Wenchi Municipal Police Commander also urged the women to report suspected corruption related cases to relevant institutions.
He also took them through the procedures for reporting suspected criminal activities and corruption related cases to the police.
C/Supt Kwakye noted that corruption-related offences could arise in everyday transactions and advised the women to also report police personnel and public officials who misconducted themselves or abuse their powers to the service.
He said reporting those misconducts remained essential in the fight against corruption, assuring that the police would continue to guarantee the confidentiality of their informants.
Some of the participants who spoke during an open forum expressed appreciation to the NCCE, saying that the event had enlightened them.
