Ho, Oct 9, GNA-A delegation of chiefs from the Volta Regional House of Chiefs have returned from China, beaming with development prospects as they notched some bilateral partnerships and strategic investment opportunities with some Chinese companies.

Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, President of the House, in a debriefing exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency, described the business trip as “strategic, enormous, insightful and timely.”

The visit, at the invitation of Ghana’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Mr Kojo Bonsu, is aimed at exploring concrete investment partnerships to support development initiatives and address key challenges facing the Volta Region.

The delegation, coordinated by Mr Peter Ahiakpor, a Volta native and businessman, includes Togbe Gabusu VII of Hohoe, Togbe Atikpladza Agbi Yao VIII of Kpalime, Togbe Sei II of Botoku, Togbe Dagadu IX of Kpando, Togbe Tenge Dzokoto Gligui VII of Anyako, and Togbe Adama III of Some’.

The Chiefs were received at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport by Ambassador Bonsu, a team of Chinese business executives, Mr Jiang Jia Hua and Mr Blaze Li of Sinohui Investment Corporation, and Madam Aku-Sika Kpene, a daughter of the Volta Region and Board Member of the Produce Buying Company (Shea).

The investment mission focused on opportunities in Information and Communication Technology, technology transfer, education and skills development, agriculture and agribusiness, sanitation and waste management, as well as tourism and heritage development.

During the 10-day business trip, four strategic agreements were signed with Chinese companies to promote international partnerships and investment, technology and skill transfer, infrastructure development and aquaculture in the Volta Region, to support sustainable development in the region.

The first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Guangdong Welleap Information Technology Company, a Chinese technology firm, to promote digital transformation and facilitate technology transfer to the Volta Region.

The second agreement, with Foshan Jinting Construction Engineering Company Limited, a construction and engineering firm based in Foshan, focuses on infrastructure and industrial development.

A third comprehensive investment agreement was signed with SINOHUI Investment Ghana Limited, which specialises in urban road construction and urban sewerage systems is meant to explore opportunities for cooperation in infrastructure development and engineering services, would provide a platform for channelling Chinese direct investment into Ghana.

Togbe President indicated particularly that the ICT school, to be equipped with practical training facilities and laboratories would provide hands-on technical training and to potentially attract students from neighbouring countries, including Togo, Benin, and Nigeria.

He said a collaboration with existing Ho Technical University in the region is also being considered.

The fourth agreement, signed with Moaming Yuantian Food Co., Ltd., a major Chinese aquaculture company, focuses on investment in commercial fish farming in the Volta Basin.

Togbe Tepre Hodo said the Moaming Yuantian Food Co., Ltd. is reported to have a daily tilapia processing capacity of 150,000 kilogrammes across nine production lines and exports fish products to about 70 countries.

He said the aquaculture partnership is expected to support increased fish production, create employment opportunities and promote the development of commercial fish farming in the Volta Basin.

Again, Togbe Tepre Hodo disclosed that waste treatment and management featured strongly in the bilateral partnerships to introduce another important component of waste treatment equipment and operation services to the region.

He said his development was underpinned to sustain the ‘Oxygen City’ accolade of the regional capital, Ho, for Chinese company to deploy own equipment to collect waste, sort waste into plastic, glass, paper, and organic waste to facilitate recycling measures.

He said the long-term benefits would be to turn waste to energy.

“Can you imagine the employment potentials of these projects, off-the-chest of the government, the economic fallouts to the regional space and beyond is enormous,” Togbe postulated?

Togbe Tepre Hodo said the House had swiftly swung into preparatory works fashioning out details of incorporation of companies, apply for the necessary permits, licenses, and other regulatory regimes to pave the way for implementation of these projects with dispatch.

Overall, Togbe President said the visit established potential partnerships in technology, skills development, waste management, and infrastructure. The next priority is to translate the agreements and investment proposals into concrete projects that can create jobs, build local technical capacity, attract further investment, and contribute to the Volta Region’s economic development.
