Accra, Oct. 14, GNA – Teaching and learning have resumed in some basic schools in James Town, Accra, following the suspension of a two-week nationwide strike by organised teacher unions.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to some schools showed teachers were at post, teaching students, while pupils were in their classrooms engaged in academic activities.
The school compounds were calm, with no pupils seen loitering around during instructional hours.
At the John Wesley Methodist Basic School at Palladium, James Town, teaching, and learning were ongoing, with students seated in their classrooms and teachers conducting lessons.
The situation was similar at the Richard Akwei Memorial Basic School and the Derby Avenue R/C Basic School, all in James Town, where teachers had returned to the classrooms and academic activities had resumed.
The strike was declared on September 25, 2026, by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers over delays in placing promoted staff on their appropriate salary scales, as well as the non-payment of promotion allowances and arrears.
The unions suspended the industrial action on Friday, October 9, 2026, following engagements with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment and the Council of State.
The suspension followed an agreement with the FWSC on outstanding allowances and arrears, although engagements on the unions’ remaining grievances were expected to continue.
The union leadership subsequently directed members to return to the classrooms on Monday, October 12, to enable teaching and learning to resume while discussions on the outstanding issues continued.
The return to the classrooms is expected to restore normal academic activities in public schools affected by the strike.
