Istanbul, Ocr 6. (dpa/GNA) – A student from another school, stabbed eight pupils at a middle school in Istanbul’s Başakşehir district on Tuesday, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül said.
Five students were slightly injured and were expected to be discharged later in the day, Gül told reporters after visiting the hospital, where the injured are being treated.
Two others were still being treated, though their injuries are not life-threatening, he said.
One child was in surgery, Gül said, adding that he could not assess the child’s condition until the operation ended.
Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu, earlier said one student was in critical condition. The governor described the attacker as a female student who lives in the same neighbourhood, and attends a different school. He said she entered the school in her school uniform and stabbed the children “indiscriminately.”
Hürriyet Daily reported that police detained the student and launched an investigation. The attack took place at around 8:40 am (0540 GMT) at a school in the Kayaşehir neighbourhood, state news agency Anadolu reported.
Footage shared on social media showed ambulances on the school site and panicked students.
