Leipzig, Germany – Oct 6. (dpa/GNA) – A Christmas stollen or fruitcake, made in the Ore Mountains in eastern Germany and intended for Pope Leo XIV, was driven to Rome in an official vehicle, officials in Dresden, the capital of state of Saxony, revealed on Tuesday.
The cake, weighing around 4 kilograms, was considered too fragile to be transported by air, the Saxon State Chancellery said.
Saxon Premier Michael Kretschmer took the special gift to the Vatican for a private audience at the end of September.
The cake was reportedly too large to be taken into the cabin and too fragile to be placed in the aircraft hold, the officials said.
The official vehicle also transported other gifts and documents. No information was provided on the cost.
A stollen is a heavy cake containing dried fruit, nuts and almond paste served usually at Christmas or Easter.
