Cairo, Oct 11, (dpa/GNA) – Saudi Arabia has struck the airport of the Yemeni capital Sana’a, following the deadly attack on Riyadh’s airport, the Houthi militia said on Sunday.
Saudi combat jets bombed the airport, the Houthi-controlled Saba news agency reported. There were initially no reports of casualties or damage. Saudi Arabia had not commented at the time of reporting.
The Houthis have controlled the city and large areas of northern Yemen and along the western coast for about 10 years, including following their most recent offensive.
The strike appears to be a direct response by Saudi Arabia to a serious attack in the Saudi capital Riyadh. At least 12 people were killed and more than 300 others injured in the strike on King Khalid International Airport, the most serious attack in years.
The conflict between the kingdom and the Iran-backed militia flared up again in July with Saudi strikes on Sana’a airport, when Saudi Arabia sought to prevent an aircraft arriving from Iran from landing in Sana’a.
Since then, mutual attacks and heavy fighting between both sides and allied militias in Yemen have been increasing.
