Adaklu Waya (V/R), Oct. 4 GNA – Mama Kalesi I, Sub-Queen Mother of Adaklu Waya has expressed concern about the alarming rate of drug peddling and use among the youth in the area.
She said she had received reliable information that some students in the area were alledgedly peddling and using drugs in schools.
Mama Kalesi, therefore, appealed to the Adaklu District Security Council (DISEC) to, as a matter of urgency, nib the menace in the bud before it escalated.
She raised the concern during a visit to the area by Mr Jerry Yao Ameko, Adaklu District Chief Executive (DCE) as part of activities marking the National Sanitation Day exercise.
Mr Ameko, who corroborated the concerns of the queen mother, said drug abuse was becoming a critical public health and social crisis, with vulnerable children being exposed to health risk.
“What we are gathering for our children today can be destroyed tomorrow if our children become drug addicts,” he added.
The DCE described the situation as a multi-dimensional crisis that demanded urgent and collective action and called on stakeholders to intensify concerted efforts to curb the sale and use of hard drugs to secure the future of the youth.
Mr Ameko said heads of schools in the area had been authorized to hand over any student found selling or using drugs to the law enforcement agencies.
He, therefore, cautioned those dealing in marijuana in the area to put a stop to the practice before they were caught in the web of the law.
