Sunyani, (Bono), Oct. 12, GNA – Food vendors in some public schools in the Sunyani Municipality have commended teachers in Ghanaian pre-tertiary institutions for calling off their strike and resuming academic work.
While commending the teachers for abandoning their strike, the vendors appealed to the government of Ghana to adequately address their concerns of the teachers to prevent any further recurrent strike actions.
According to the food vendors, the just ended two-week nationwide industrial action by teacher unions had a huge toll, disrupting their economic activities and thereby affecting their ability to support the upkeep of themselves and their immediate families.
The food vendors made the appeal in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) during round visits to some of the Basic Schools in the municipality to assess the outcome of the suspension of the teachers strike action.
It was noticed that effective teaching and learning were progressing at the Roman Catholic Cluster of Schools in Sunyani which had about 3,000 learners.
The food vendors at the school premises commended the teachers for their decision to return to the classroom and asked the government to address the concerns too.
Maa Augustina Boakyiwaa, a fried yam seller, noted that the strike had affected her ability to fend for her family.
“As mothers, we always support our husbands, but we were unable to do so during the two-week strike”, she stated.
She said she had already purchased some tubers of yam when the teachers’ strike set in and slowed down her business.
She appealed to the government to address the concerns of the teachers.
Maame Gina Asantewaa, a plain rice and stew seller, noted that the strike affected her economic activities and urged the government to be expeditious in tackling the concerns and problems of the teachers.
“All that we want is peace so that we can also do our businesses in the schools without challenges,” she stated.
