Accra, Oct 02, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Friday toured affected areas of the September 28, flood disaster in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region.
He sympathised with the victims and also presented assorted relief items to them at Hohoe Zongo.
The flood, which occurred primarily on Monday, September 28, 2026, was triggered by a torrential nine-hour downpour that began on the night of Sunday, September 27, 2026.
The disaster happened when the River Dayi overflowed its banks, and the flood waters submerged over 400 homes, displacing over 5,000 residents across seven communities including Hohoe Zongo in the Hohoe Municipality.

President Mahama in his remarks said climate change was leading to what he called “extreme weather phenomena.”
“This is not something that happens every year, but now, at times, the rain falls excessively, and sometimes too there’s a drought, it doesn’t fall at all, so now you can’t predict how the weather will behave,” the President stated.
President Mahama said he had been informed that continuous rainfall in Togo, brought a lot of water down the River Dayi, and flooded the low-lying areas of Hohoe, which was mostly the Zongo, and other communities by the river side.
“And so, we came here today to sympathise with Togbega, the chiefs, and the people who have been affected, and we also brought a few items to donate,” the President said
President Mahama said two of his Ministers – Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Mr Kwami Governs Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways- had already brought some donations to the affected victims.
He said the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) had also brought some relief items.
“So, these items are from the Presidency, we brought it to present to the people,” the President said.
President Mahama announced that the owner of Dzata Cement, who happens to be his younger brother, had also promised 5,000 bags of cement to help the people whose houses had been destroyed.
He said he was leaving the items in the hands of Mr Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hohoe; Mr Prosper Kumi, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive and Mr James Gunu, the Regional Minister to distribute them fairly to the affected.

President acknowledged Togbega Gabusu VII, the Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, the Zongo Chiefs, Mr Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, the Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Mr Prosper Kumi, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, the Presiding Member of Hohoe Municipal Assembly, and all those who had been available to help following the disaster.
Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister expressed gratitude to President Mahama for the support he had been giving to the Region anytime there was a natural disaster.
Togbega Gabusu VII, thanked the President for the relief support and tour of the flood disaster areas; adding that it shows the father that he was to the nation.
