Pope’s lung recovering well from surgery, doctors say

Rome, Oct 15. (dpa/GNA) – Pope Leo XIV is continuing to recover according to plan following lung surgery, his doctors said on Thursday.

A chest X-ray of the 71-year-old head of the Catholic Church, indicated “good recovery of lung that underwent surgery,” the treating doctors said at Rome’s Gemelli clinic.

Results from routine check-ups carried out in the morning were within the normal range, according to the doctors.

During a lengthy operation on Tuesday, doctors removed a malignant tumour from Leo’s right lung, removing the lower lobe of the right lung in the process.

A nodule detected there earlier turned out to be a lung adenocarcinoma, or malignant tumour.  This is the most common form of lung cancer, according to experts.

The pope is odue to remain in hospital until next week. The extent of his further treatment following the procedure will depend in part on histological findings expected in the coming days.

The pope’s official appointments have been cancelled until the middle of next week.  It is unclear whether Leo can begin a planned trip to Latin America in early November, which is scheduled to last almost two weeks.

The trip has not been cancelled to date.
