Tema, Oct. 27, GNA – The AfriKan Continental Union Consult (ACUC) has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama, to use Ghana’s anticipated leadership role within the African Union (AU) to advance efforts towards establishing a unified continental government.Â
Mr Benjamin Anyagre Aziginaateeg, the Leader of ACUC in Ghana, said African leaders needed to move beyond declarations and agreements on continental integration, towards practical measures to strengthen political and economic cooperation.
In an advocacy statement addressed to President Mahama, Mr Aziginaateeg said the quest for African unity, championed by leaders including Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, remained unfinished.
He traced the movement for African unity to initiatives such as the Fifth Pan-African Congress in Manchester in 1945 and the All-African Peoples’ Conferences, which contributed to the struggle against colonialism and political fragmentation.
He also cited the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 and its transformation into the African Union in 2002 as important milestones in the continent’s integration efforts.
He, however, said the continent continued to face challenges, including fragmented markets, divided political authorities and limited collective influence in global decision-making.
Mr Aziginaateeg noted that although the AU had adopted treaties, protocols and Agenda 2063, the continent needed stronger mechanisms to translate its integration commitments into practical outcomes.
He urged President Mahama to use his proposed Accra Reset initiative as a platform to promote collective African economic transformation and strengthen the continent’s position in global affairs.
He also called for a practical, constitutional and democratically accountable system of continental government, arguing that African leaders needed the political will to advance the long-standing objective of unity.
The ACUC leader cited the contributions of Dr Nkrumah and former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to the campaign for a United States of Africa, urging contemporary leaders to assess progress made and identify concrete steps towards deeper integration.
He said African leaders should focus on addressing unfinished aspects of the continental unity agenda and developing practical programmes to promote shared prosperity and strengthen Africa’s influence internationally.
“Now, Africa needs more than another promise of unity. Now, Africa needs functionally productive unity,” he said.
Mr Aziginaateeg urged President Mahama and other African leaders to ensure that efforts towards unity produced tangible outcomes for the continent’s people and future generations.
