Accra, Oct. 12, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed all prospective parliamentary aspirants to suspend campaign activities with immediate effect, pending the announcement of official guidelines.
The directive covers aspirants, their agents and supporters, including activities intended to solicit support from delegates and party members.
A statement issued by Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP General Secretary, on Sunday said the party had received complaints that some prospective parliamentary aspirants had begun campaigning in various constituencies.
It said the prohibited activities included mounting posters, billboards and banners, organising rallies and polling station executive meetings or tours to solicit support, distributing items or offering inducements to delegates and party members, and using paid media and social media advertisements to promote candidacies. The statement said such activities contravened the party’s regulations and Code of Conduct, created an uneven playing field and undermined the unity and discipline necessary for the party’s success.
It also prohibited party officers at the polling station, electoral area, constituency, regional and national levels, as well as the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), from endorsing parliamentary aspirants on social media platforms, including Facebook, X and Instagram, or facilitating premature campaign activities.
“Any person who fails to comply will be dealt with in accordance with the Party’s disciplinary procedure, which may affect their eligibility to contest,” the statement said.
It said the party would announce the timetable and guidelines for the parliamentary selection process in due course.
The statement urged constituency and regional executives to ensure strict compliance with the directive within their respective jurisdictions.
