‎Accra, Sept. 30, GNA – The National Theatre has honoured playwright James Ebo Whyte and 10 former staff for their contributions to Ghana’s performing arts.

‎The recognition celebrated their decades of service and contributions to the Theatre’s artistic, technical and administrative development.

‎Speaking at the ceremony in Accra on Tuesday, Mr Henry Herbert Malm, Executive Director of the National Theatre, said the institution appreciated the professionalism, commitment and contributions of the honourees to Ghana’s cultural heritage.

‎He said the awards, comprising citations, products from Unilever Ghana and GTP, and undisclosed cash amounts, demonstrated that dedication and selfless service would receive recognition.

“Whatever we are doing, let’s know that people are watching. Your own colleagues are watching and when the time comes to determine who deserves recognition, they will come forward and say this person deserves it,” he said.

‎Mr Malm commended the honourees for their service and urged current staff to remain committed to their work.

Mr Whyte, Chief Executive Officer of Roverman Productions, popularly known as Uncle Ebo, received a Distinguished Achievement Award in Theatre for his contribution to Ghanaian theatre as a writer, director and producer.

‎His citation said: “Your bold creative vision, relentless pursuit of excellence and commitment to powerful storytelling have shaped unforgettable theatrical experiences. We honour your visionary artistic leadership, mastery of stagecraft and profound impact on the performing arts as a writer, director and producer.”

‎Receiving the award, Mr Whyte pledged to give lifetime tickets to his drama productions to all the awardees.

“Without National Theatre, there would have been no Roverman Productions. Roverman Productions was born here, and it is befitting that this award is coming in September because the first show was on September 6, 2008,” he said.

‎Nii Ashikwei Kwabotswe II, Teshie Dzaasetse and Head of the Lenshie Clan, was also honoured for his service to the Theatre.

He joined the institution in 1995, rose through the ranks and retired in 2016 as Director of Administration.

‎Other awardees were Mr David Tawiah Amo, former Artistic Director; Miss Grace Djabaki Djabatey, former Production Manager; Miss Theresa Abui Tetteh of the National Symphony Orchestra; Mr Emmanuel Oblitey Tetteh; Mr Nelson Dzandu; Mr Humphery Kuto of the National Symphony Orchestra; Mr Bossman Amoako; Mr Daniel Odatey Lamptey; and Mr Seth Otumfo.
