Kumasi, Oct. 28, GNA – The MTN Ghana Foundation has awarded 500 scholarships to students and teachers pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-related programmes to improve access to education and strengthen the country’s human resource development.
The scholarships, under the Foundation’s Bright Scholarship Programme, comprise 300 awards for tertiary students pursuing STEM-related, vocational and technical programmes and 200 for teachers pursuing degree programmes in those fields.
The initiative is aimed at easing the financial burden on beneficiaries, while equipping them with the requisite knowledge and skills to contribute to national development.
Mr. Robert Kuzoe, The Senior Manager of the MTN Ghana Foundation, announced this at the 2026 Bright Scholarship Awards Ceremony in Kumasi.
He said the awards formed part of the Foundation’s commitment to giving back to Ghanaians for their continued support of MTN over the past 30 years.
Mr. Kuzoe said each scholarship package covered tuition and accommodation and provided a laptop and a stipend to support beneficiaries throughout their studies.
He said the programme was not merely about providing financial assistance but also about investing in human potential and ensuring that financial circumstances did not limit the ambitions of talented young people.
He noted that teachers were critical to the development of the country’s human resource base and deserved support to improve their knowledge and professional competencies.
Mr. Kuzoe said educational development required the collective efforts of families, educational institutions, businesses and other stakeholders, adding that, the Foundation would continue to play its part in expanding opportunities.
Since its inception in 2018, the Bright Scholarship Programme has supported 1,220 students, producing 17 overall best students, 199 first-class graduates, 47 second-class upper graduates and 16 second-class lower graduates.
Mr. Charles Osei Akoto, Head of Technical for the MTN Ghana Northern Business District, said the scholarship programme demonstrated the Foundation’s belief that talent was everywhere, although opportunities were not always equally accessible.
He said financial challenges and the cost of education continued to prevent many talented students from realising their full potential.
Mr. Akoto described the scholarship programme as more than financial assistance, saying it was an investment in the future of beneficiaries and the country.
He congratulated the recipients on their hard work, commitment and potential, urging them to make good use of the opportunity to advance their education and contribute to society.
Some parents and guardians of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the MTN Ghana Foundation for the financial support, describing the Bright Scholarship Programme as a timely intervention that would ease the burden of financing their children’s education.
They commended the Foundation for investing in the future of young people and called for the continuation of the initiative to support more deserving students.
