Rome, Oct 13. (dpa/GNA) – A caver who had been trapped in a cave in Sardinia for more than 27 hours has been rescued, emergency services said on Monday evening.
The 31-year-old Italian was freed from the rubble by mountain and cave rescue teams and the fire brigade, according to a statement.
The man had been trapped at a depth of 10 metres since Sunday afternoon, following a landslide which buried the entrance to the cave near Urzulei in the east of the Italian Mediterranean island.
Rescuers described the operation as extremely difficult, with more than 30 specialists working alongside firefighters to clear the debris blocking the cave entrance.
The rescue operation continued throughout the night into Monday. During this time, the rescue teams were able to make contact with the man and confirm that he was alive and conscious.
After his rescue, the caver was brought to the surface and stabilized by medical staff. He was then to be flown by helicopter to a hospital for examination and further treatment.
