Accra, Oct 29, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama delivered a personal and historically grounded address at the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, thanking Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian people for decades of support to the African continent.
He also cited his own experience as a scholarship student in then Soviet Union as proof of that enduring friendship.
Speaking at the Third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, President Mahama said the relationship between Russia and Africa was forged during the struggles against colonialism and apartheid, and he made an explicit appeal for continued partnership grounded in that history.
“You stood by Africa during the struggle against colonialism and extended support to the newly independent African countries”, Mahama said, according to the text of his remarks.
President Mahama highlighted education as a central pillar of the relationship, noting that Russia had trained thousands of African professionals.
“You educated and provided skills training to 1000s of African students over the years … to help in the development of our countries,” he said.
