Sekondi, Oct 12, GNA – The Life Relief Foundation (LRF), together with the Africa Training and Research Associate, (ATRA) have commenced an initiative aimed at creating safe and conducive centres for youth within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan area.
The youth urban safety and friendly spaces when properly executed would ensure that the youth in the metropolis leave the ghettos and other unapproved joints for decent spaces where learning, mentorship and general well-being conversations would take place for a brighter future for the metropolis and the nation as a whole.
Mr. Ebenezer Kye-Mensah, from the ATRA, at an engagement with selected Assembly Members on place making under the ‘Sound Cities Project’ said research had confirmed that structural failures in the development planning of the cities had resulted in the many indiscipline among the youth of Ghana.
He said: “Our engagement with the youth showed an envisioned community where streets lights worked, well designed pedestrian walkways, centres for positive interactions, and relaxation.
“Again, the youth are not expecting politicians to use them for their personal gains during elections but actively make them a part of the planning processes within the assemblies particularly on issues that affects them the most.”
Mr. Kye-Mensah said the relational wellbeing component of the project was therefore in line to bridging such disturbing gap between the youth and the authorities.
Mr. Seyram Kugblenu, the Project Coordinator for the LRF, said some communities had been selected to take part in the initial project hoping for a scale up to cover other electoral areas in the metropolis.
He added that students from the Takoradi Technical University, UMAT and other TVET institutions were also taking part of the project.
The assembly members were expected to identify spaces within their communities to enable the project to create that youth enhanced centres.
