Tanoso (Ash), Oct. 24, GNA – The Kwadaso Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has intensified its engagement with young people in the municipality to promote adolescent health and the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV).
It has urged the communities within the area to strengthen systems that protect adolescents from abuse and discrimination.
Ms. Mavis Achiaa Opoku, the Kwadaso Municipal Director of the NCCE, said parents and guardians had an important role in ensuring adolescent girls received the care, and support needed.
She expressed concern that many parents still distanced themselves from issues relating to menstrual hygiene, making it difficult for adolescent girls to openly discuss their health needs and receive the necessary attention.
Ms. Achiaa Opoku made the call during a cinema show, as part of a series of civic education activities by the Kwadaso Municipal Directorate of the NCCE under the Adolescent Girls Programme, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with funding from Global Affairs Canada.
It was hosted in Tanoso North and South Electoral Areas, to deliberately target men and boys to encourage positive masculinity and promote shared responsibility in supporting adolescent health.
The initiative, she noted, forms part of a nationwide programme aimed at strengthening community awareness, promoting positive social and gender norms, enhancing adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and preventing gender-based violence.
The Municipal Director urged parents to maintain open communication with their children and provide them with the needed assistance on issues affecting their health.
