Kumasi, Oct. 09, GNA – Demolition work to clear the right of way for the construction of the next phase of the Suame Interchange has commenced at Abrepo Junction in Kumasi.
A well-equipped security task force and personnel of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), supported by a bulldozer, were on site to carry out the exercise in accordance with directives from the city authorities and the contractor’s specifications.
The exercise follows earlier engagements by the Mayor of Kumasi, Mr. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, who, on August 25, 2026, led a team of technical experts, including road engineers, to Abrepo Junction and other areas earmarked for the project.
During the visit, the Mayor and his team interacted with residents and briefed them on the planned evacuation exercise to pave the way for construction work.
Later that day, the KMA Public Relations Unit issued a press release directing traders and garage owners operating along the Abrepo and WESCO sections of the project to relocate on or before September 7, 2026.
However, in a subsequent notice issued on October 1, 2026, the Assembly extended the relocation deadline to Tuesday, October 7, 2026, to give affected persons additional time to move their businesses and belongings.
On Wednesday, October 7, a day before the demolition exercise began, the Mayor again led a security task force to the affected areas to caution traders and other occupants to relocate before enforcement action commenced.
By the time the demolition exercise started, most occupants along the Abrepo and WESCO sections had voluntarily relocated, leaving behind debris and other materials for subsequent clearance by the city authorities.
However, the temporary structures, billboards and tables of a few traders who had failed to comply with the relocation directive were demolished to clear the right of way for the next phase of the interchange project.
The Suame Interchange project is expected to improve traffic movement and ease congestion within one of Kumasi’s major transport corridors.
