Have (V/R), Oct. 2, GNA – The Have Health Centre in the Afadzato South District of the Volta Region is to get a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to improve neonatal healthcare delivery.Ā
The facility, when completed, will be the first of its kind in the Afadzato South District and is expected to save the lives of premature and critically ill newborns.
The project was lobbied for by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Afadzato South, Mr Frank Afriyie, through a philanthropist whose support is facilitating the construction and equipping of the unit.
Mr Afriyie said the initiative was not just an upgrade to the existing maternity ward, but a dedicated intensive care facility for newborns requiring specialized care.
He said the NICU would be equipped with modern incubators, phototherapy machines, baby warmers, and other essential neonatal equipment.
He noted that the facility would serve Afadzato South and surrounding districts, including Afadzato South, Kpando and Hohoe, reducing referrals to the Ho Teaching Hospital.
Work is currently progressing steadily at the Have Health Center, with contractors on site executing the project.
During a visit to the site by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), on Thursday October 1,2026, workers were seen undertaking construction works, while some medical equipment had already been delivered.
Mr Raphael Kpodo, a resident of Have, welcomed the development, describing it as a major boost to healthcare delivery in the district.
He said mothers and newborns previously had to travel long distances to Ho for emergency neonatal care, often resulting in complications.
Another resident, Madam Esi Amegah, said the facility would address long-standing challenges associated with neonatal deaths and birth complications in the area.
The Have Health Center, which serves over 15 communities, is gradually being transformed into a major health facility to serve the growing population.
Health officials at the center said neonatal cases accounted for a significant number of referrals, and the NICU would help reduce neonatal mortality in the district.
The MP commended the philanthropist for supporting the project and called for continued collaboration to improve healthcare.
He reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure, including upgrading more CHPS compounds to health centers in the constituency.
